Basketry has deep roots in place. While techniques across cultures are still based in loops, twists, weaves, and wraps, the plant fibers used were historically specific to each place and largely foraged. Now in the 21st century, the basket making scene looks a little bit different. While foragingfor materials is still prevalent, much of the forageable land has been urbanized.
This workshop embraces this new landscape and explores creating baskets in an urban environment. Students will learn about regional plants suitable for basketry and cordage, non-regional plants suitable for cultivation, and how to process the plant fibers into workable material as well as incorporating less- traditional materials found in the urban environment like soft plastics into their baskets. Learning various basketry techniques including cording, looping, and twining, students will create several small samples and at least one finished basket. No experience required. Includes most materials; see website for a list of supplies and please bring a lunch both days.
