the word for world is forest / 2025
installed at mother dog studios, houston, tx
materials
Basket, broom, and cordage samples made while teaching others (cultivated umbrella sedge [Cyperus alternafolius] and broomcorn [Sorghum bicolor[, foraged flaxlily [genus Dianella] and giant reed [Arundo donax]), cordage made with and by community, handspun linen thread, jute (genus Cochorus) sticks, found discarded wood, and foraged acorns from 2025 mast year
note
The cordage in this installation was made collaboratively and tied together during Groundswell, a backyard women’s healing festival. Each cord is a voice, collectively echoing through and with the forest. Thank you to each of the women who sat together, spoke about this mast year, and learned to create cordage. The word for world is forest.
The Word for World is Forest is a short story by Ursula K Le Guin.
